The Urban Legend of Alberta Gallion London

Over 6 days Jojo collaborated with three classes of Year 6 students and their teachers from Gallions Primary School. The Classes were divided in 6 workshop groups of interest: storytelling, filmmaking, sound, performance, costume and banner collage making.

Alberta Gallion came to life on the 14th of June with a public performative procession through the local area and an exhibition of the students, workshop participants and Jojo’s own artworks at RAW Labs. This event was part of The London Festival of Architecture, featured as a programme highlight in their review of the year.

The Urban Legend of Alberta Gallion was a partnership project produced by Bow Arts with Notting Hill Genesis.

Jojo Hynes was selected as the Bow Arts artist in residence at RAW Labs, Royal Albert Wharf in 2018. As part of her 4 month artist residence Jojo facilitated arts workshops with local community and school groups to create a future Heroine for the area. Her name is ‘Alberta Gallion’. Alberta is an urban legend inspired by local Heroines past and present.

TULCA 2018: Syntonic State curated by Linda Shevlin

Jojo Hynes collaborated with Dooras National School over 5 different 90min workshops exploring, painting, printmaking, storytelling and physical theatre.

The Good Yarn is an art-in-education project that draws inspiration from Galway’s merchant and mariner past, specifically the lucrative wool trade of South County Galway.

Through a series of in-school creative workshops, artist-educator Jojo Hynes engaged with primary pupils in the coastal area of Kinvara to explore narratives of nostalgia, alternative economies and future culture in response to their local environment.

Pupils responded to the curatorial ideas underpinning the festival through visual enquiry and intergenerational participation.

Sound Play! Sound and Movement Project

I was invited to be a facilitator on Sound Play!

Limehouse Town Hall Consortium Trust in partnership with Stitches in Time, the Boxing Club and Queen Mary University of London’s Department of Drama collaborated with group of young people from E14 to create Sound Play!, a contemporary performance workshop focused on the sounds of the city.

A group of 10-14-year-old artists undertook research into the sounds of their local area with the support of researchers from Queen Mary and artist Jojo Hynes. In addition to hanging out, sharing meals and doing some spectacularly bad karaoke together, the young artist researchers took to the streets of Limehouse to record what they heard.

These recordings became the basis for a sound piece that was installed in Epping Forest (with thanks to the Epping Forest Field Centre for being such wonderful hosts). The young artists were joined in the forest by an audience of participants from Stitches in Time’s annual Locksley Playscheme..

Folkestone Triennial 2017 Workshops

‘FANTASTICAL FOLKESTONE FUNFAIR’ - Primary Workshop

In response to Lubaina Himid 'Jelly Mould Pavilion' on the Rotunda Funfair Site.

We will design and create a new Fantastical Folkestone Funfair, an imaginative amusement park that can defy reality. Students will work in groups to create different themed funfairs. Taking inspiration from carnival patterns students will use collage and large cardboard to create a sculptural installation.

Wish You Were Here - Secondary Workshop

In response to Richard Woods’ Holiday Home, we will explore the representation of place and the notion of home through the mediums of collage and print. This workshop will be taking influence from postcards, housing advertisements and the booming market in holiday homes. Creating large absurd visual postcards that play with the future of Folkestone housing.

Youth Painting Mural & Graffiti Workshops

Jojo uses graffiti and mural projects to engage students that would normally be reluctant to participate in arts activities. The themes of the projects relate to current affairs, their local areas and youth identity.

Tuam Arts Festival

I was visual art co-ordinator and assistant artistic director of Tuam Arts Festival in Co. Galway Ireland from 2006-2010 and in 2012. Tuam Arts Festival was a mix of local, national and international spectacle, theatre, music, comedy, literature, visual arts, film and family events.

I selected and managed up to thirty visual artists and their solo/group exhibitions. I also initiated and coordinated the yearly ‘sARTurday’ event launch.

Facilitating and organising the summer art and theatre workshops was another aspect of my role. In these workshops local children and young people made street theatre props, costumes, public art, drumming and devised drama pieces for the street performance and public art exhibitions.

The 'We like short shorts' short film night and the 'Gorilla Theatre' were also events that I coordinated and promoted for the Tuam Arts Festival.
